MOUNT KENYA BY HELICOPTER
- Dawn Trip -
ITINERARY
Set off on an early morning scenic flight around the peaks of Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa. Within 40 kilometers we rise 3,000 meters, watch below as you fly through a diversity of geographical features and vegetation zones. Within the greener areas keep your eyes peeled for elephant, buffalo and a variety of plains game.
We will eventually reach the peaks, Batian and Nelion, where you will see the vast and desolate nature of Mount Kenya with its towering summit, sheer cliffs and glaciers.
Next we fly down to one of the blue mountain tarns - either Lake Michelson or Lake Alice, land for a picnic and a chance to fish for rainbow trout. A wonderful way to spend the morning in this crisp fresh air, surrounded by alpine flora. It is a helicopter excursion like no other, peaceful and remote, with the place to ourselves.
An ancient extinct volcano, standing over 5000 meters tall, in the heart of Kenya, with rugged peaks, glacial valleys and forested slopes. Mount Kenya is not only Kenya’s highest mountain, but the country’s most iconic and celebrated natural feature.
Mount Kenya National Park was formed in 1949 and in 1997 it was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site.
BATIAN & NELION
Iconic in shape and size, Mount Kenya is situated in the heart of Kenya, on the equator - its highest peak ‘Batian’ stands at 5,199 meters. The snowy peaks can be seen on clear days from as far as Mt Kilimanjaro some 300 kilometers away.
THE LAKES
Blue-green alpine lakes and sheer cliffs characterize this barren and dramatic mountain landscape.
Lake Michaelson, Lake Ellis, Lake Alice and Fox Tarn are some of our favourite spots that few have ever been so lucky to visit. Almost inaccessible and well off the beaten track, they offer an exciting morning of fly fishing.
