SAMBURU BY HELICOPTER

Day Trip | 2.5 Hours Flying

ITINERARY

This excursion is great in the mornings, for breakfast on Ol Lolokwe or late afternoons, as a sundowner excursion. Your pilot will collect you from your lodge and fly low level over the savannah landscapes of Samburu - the perfect place to spot herds of elephants and other wildlife.

Following the Ewaso Nyiro River, we start to approach Kenya's most striking landmark, Ol Lolokwe, rising abruptly 1000 meters above the plains.

We land on the summit for breakfast or sundowners and take in the endless and untouched horizons.

We continue our journey on to Naitodo - another iconic granite outcrop, that featured extensively in David Attenborough’s ‘Africa’ series, before returning to your lodge.

SAMBURU

Samburu is home to a population of approximately 900 elephants. Known for its special five rare species - the Grevy Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx, Somali Ostrich and the Gerenuk.

EWASO NYIRO

The Ewaso Nyiro flows constantly from its source from the glaciers on Mount Kenya and the Aberdares  - it represents life for the people, livestock and wildlife of the arid north.

OL LOLOKWE

Ol Lolokwe's summit has a high altitude mist forest with giant cycads and unusual birdlife including Kenya’s largest nesting colony of Ruppell’s vultures. Cycads grow in abundance; they are among the oldest living species of plant and are unique in their appearance, with dark green, spiky leaves and fronds for branches.

NAITODO

Naitodo - meaning ‘needle’ in Samburu, in reference to the huge rock pinnacles that almost looked ‘placed’ on top of this hill.
